As administrator of a regional youth attention facility, I am pleased to report that our one year old Viriguard program has been a great success. Product support and training, both from Purity Athletic corporate and their field representatives has been exceptional.

We operate a large (600 bed) secure campus, with most residents referred for corrective reasons by the court system. All new residents receive Viriguard protection during their reception processing.

Our program is physically very rigorous with a minimum 6 week “boot camp” orientation. In this context, I am pleased to report that both our attending physician and our physical training coordinator both advise that Viriguard adequately meets the athletic supporter needs of every boy.

Equally important, Viriguard has proven to be a total solution to some previous discipline issues. State regulations have long prohibited inmate display of sexual excitement, but this rule was previously difficult to enforce. Of more concern, with boys of differing ages assigned to each dorm unit, there were previous reports of predatory and other inappropriate sexual behaviors which were difficult to control. Since the implementation of the Viriguard program, these issues have been eliminated.

One benefit of the Viriguard-driven behavior improvements is that we have been able to drastically reduce the need for dorm guard and security patrols, resulting in substantial staffing savings. Also, with recent court mandated requirement that we employ more female correction officers, Viriguard has eliminated some other previous challenges for our female guards.

Our recent audit found that Viriguard was cost effective and actually resulted in $3.20 per day, per unit savings in personnel costs. Recently I was conducting a facility tour for some state politicians. We were observing a platoon of 50 boys on the drill field performing sit ups and leg raises as part of their physical training regime. The chairman of the state Senate appropriations committee commented about the bright orange Viriguard legs straps visible through the leg openings of the group’s PT shorts. His attitude greatly improved when I told him that the Viriguard on that platoon of boys saved the taxpayers over $160 that day alone.
