Antilock Brake System

The BMW R1100’s Antilock Brake System ensures that the bike will stop on slippery surfaces.

Here you can see the left front brake disc, the twin-piston brake caliper, the toothed rotation sensor wheel, and the speedometer cable.

Here you can see the rear brake disc and twin-piston brake caliper. The wire coming out of the axle housing is for the rear wheel rotation sensor.

When you learn to drive a car, you train to let off the brakes in case of a rear-wheel lockup. If you get a rear-wheel lockup on a motorcycle, the last thing you want to do is left off the rear brakes. Otherwise you risk getting violently thrown off the bike. With ABS, rear-wheel lockup won’t happen in the first place.

In certain offroad conditions, it’s preferable not to have ABS, so the system can be temporarily shut off.
