Edge-Spoked Wheels

The wheel-ends of the spokes go through holes in the edge of the wheel, not in the center. This allows the use of tubeless tires.

Another advantage over conventional spoked wheels is that instead of making a skinny triangle with one vertex at the rim center and the two base points at the wheel flanges, the MBW system arranges the spokes in a concave quadrilateral, or a bow-tie. Spokes from the left flange go to the right rim-edge; spokes from the right flange go to the left rim-edge. This results in a tremendously strong wheel.

Unfortunately, setting the tension on these wheels is extremely tricky and, to someone used to doing it on conventional wheels, counter-intuitive. Of the twoindependent wheel-truers known to work on BMW edge-spoked wheels, one quit doing it.
